At Sugarloaf Medical P.C., we strive to ensure patient safety, clear communication, and effective coordination of care. The following guidelines explain how laboratory tests are ordered, performed, and communicated to you. Please read carefully to understand our processes and your responsibilities.
LabCorp is our primary in-office laboratory service. The phlebotomists drawing your labs are employed by LabCorp.
If your insurance requires or you prefer Quest Diagnostics, please inform our staff or the phlebotomist before your blood draw so we can accommodate your needs.
By adhering to this Laboratory Tests and Results Policy, you help us provide accurate, timely, and well-coordinated care. Please schedule an appointment if you have any questions or concerns about your lab results, and thank you for choosing Sugarloaf Medical P.C. for your healthcare needs.

We offer a variety of non-invasive diagnostic and imaging services to support accurate diagnosis and quality medical care. Most of the in-office diagnostic procedures, with the exception of home sleep studies, are performed by our trained staff and interpreted by our physicians. Home sleep studies, if taken home, are administered by our staff but interpreted by a board-certified sleep specialist from an external service. All ultrasound exams are conducted in-office by a third-party ultrasound technician, and results are typically read by a physician affiliated with Emory University.
Please allow up to one week for results to be available in your patient portal. A follow-up visit is often scheduled to discuss findings. Patients are kindly asked not to request interpretations from the staff at the time of the test.
These appointments are typically scheduled during your check-out. If that is not possible, please call our office as soon as you can. Diagnostic appointments are booked by phone only, not through the patient portal, to ensure the proper setup and preparation for each specific test. For accurate results and your safety—especially for critical tests—it's essential to follow preparation instructions carefully and arrive on time.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) This test records your blood pressure throughout a full 24-hour period during your normal daily routine and sleep. It helps diagnose high blood pressure patterns that may not be detected during a standard office visit, such as white-coat or masked hypertension. You’ll wear a cuff on your arm connected to a small monitor. The device inflates periodically throughout the day and night. It is important to return at your scheduled time the following day so the device can be prepared for other patients. Please handle the equipment with care and avoid exposing it to water or impact. Your results will be reviewed by your physician and discussed at your next visit.
Home Sleep Study This overnight study is used to evaluate for sleep apnea and other breathing disorders during sleep. You will receive a small device with sensors that track breathing, oxygen levels, and heart rate while you sleep in your own bed. A short questionnaire must be completed prior to the study—please complete this via your check-in link. The device must be returned the next morning at your scheduled time, as it is used by other patients. Handle the equipment gently, keep it clean and dry, and store it in a safe location when not in use. Results are interpreted by a third-party sleep specialist and discussed during your follow-up visit.
DEXA Scan (Bone Density Test) DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) scans measure bone density and assess your risk of fractures or osteoporosis. This test is recommended for postmenopausal women, men over 70, or individuals with risk factors such as long-term steroid use, smoking, or prior fractures. You’ll lie on a table while a scanner moves over your hips and spine. There is no pain or preparation involved. A brief questionnaire must be completed before the scan—please use your check-in link. Results are interpreted by your physician and discussed during a follow-up.
Spirometry (Pulmonary Function Test) Spirometry measures how well your lungs work by assessing airflow and lung volume. It helps diagnose asthma, COPD, and other lung conditions. During the test, you’ll be asked to take a deep breath and blow forcefully into a mouthpiece. It’s simple, safe, and quick. Some patients may be asked to avoid inhalers prior to the test; follow your physician’s instructions. Your doctor will explain the results in detail.
Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) An ECG is a painless test that records your heart’s electrical activity. It helps detect irregular heart rhythms, heart attacks, and other cardiac issues. Small sensors are placed on your chest, arms, and legs to monitor your heartbeat. The test takes about 5–10 minutes and does not require any preparation. Your physician will review and explain the results.

When you are admitted to the hospital, care is typically managed by a hospitalist team—physicians who specialize in caring for patients during hospital stays. These hospitalists coordinate closely with our office to keep us updated about your condition and treatment. To support smooth communication and continuity of care, please:

If you are scheduled for an upcoming surgery or procedure, we recommend scheduling a Preoperative Evaluation with our office to ensure your medical condition is stable and that you are safely prepared. While surgical clearance must be officially requested by your surgeon, we encourage patients to schedule this visit proactively to optimize chronic conditions such as blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease well before the surgery.
This visit should be scheduled 30–45 days prior to surgery to allow time for any needed labs, imaging, or referrals that could delay or complicate your procedure. During this appointment, we will:
Please notify our office when your surgery is scheduled, and inform the surgical team that we are your primary care provider, even if a formal clearance is not required. We will assist in coordinating care and ensuring records are available.
